Day 2-172 from one great stop to another

We left the dock in St Michaels at 10: 15 am for a leisurely 30.1 mile trip (more or less) across Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis, MD.

Except for the shipyard marina where we stayed, the whole area was pretty much deserted, including the Chesapeake Maritime Museum (picture at right). We were on a outgoing tide so we picked up about 1.5 mph, and as you can see the "waves" were just several inches high.

We were in the Miles River for about 18 miles until we passed the Bloody Point Bar Lighthouse and turned slightly northwest to cross the Bay to Annapolis. The name Bloody Point comes from local legends of a (possible) massacre of Indians by local colonists and the hanging of a villainous French pirate.

Once we were out in the Bay, the breeze picked up and we had waves of about one foot. It was a great day to be out on the Bay as was evidenced by the number of fishermen and three fleets of sailboats racing. Since Annapolis is a large sailing center it is not surprising that at least one of the fleets was a one-design national championship series.

As you enter the harbor at Annapolis, there is a long stretch of waterfront along the U.S. Naval Academy. We walked the three blocks to the center of town tonight, and once there we passed many Midshipmen in uniform. Many of them were seated or standing outside one of the MANY ice cream parlors in that area. Nothing like satisfying your sweet tooth...

We are staying at the Annapolis Yacht Basin, which proudly advertises that they can handle boats up to 225 feet. Cheap, it is not, but the location is great! Like everywhere else, we are a bit ahead of the busy season so they kindly put us at a "quiet" dock away from the yacht club and the walkway along the water.

In case you ever wondered what a 43 foot boat looks like in a slip designed to hold a 115+ foot boat, the picture to the left should answer your question... What is even better is that we are about 10 feet in from the end of the dock.

It was indeed an amazing day. Consider the final picture where I am showing off the patchwork hat that the Admiral bought me, and she is wearing a new scarf. Not so amazing? Well, I also bought a long sleeved souvenir Annapolis t-shit, which makes me the "big winner" for the day.

Tomorrow? We are probably off north to Baltimore. We love Annapolis, but don't forget that we were here for lunch and to buy an electric bike just 3 days ago. Plus, I'm sure that we will be back here again...
