Day 62 In Ft Meyers -Edison Museum and Botanical Research Lab

Many thanks to Bob and Bonnie for (very strongly) suggesting that we visit the Edison-Ford Winter Homes and the Edison Museum and Botanical Research Lab just down the road. As luck would have it, there was rain on/off during the afternoon. So, even though we walked to it, we chose the (indoor) Edison Museum and Botanical Research Lab. The present site dates from 1885, when Edison first visited Florida and purchased the property to build a vacation home. Henry Ford purchased the adjacent house in 1916, although they had been close friends for years and often travelled/vacationed together using, of course, Ford cars and trucks in a small caravan. We both found the exhibits fascinating. For me, it was extra special having grown up in northern Ohio about 30 miles from Edison's birthplace in Milan, Ohio and having visited Dearborn Village (Ford Museum near Detroit). Anyway, lots of FUN.

Bob and Bonnie picked us up just before 5:00 pm for dinner (and a little shopping along the way)...
Dinner was at the Fresh Catch Bistro in Ft. Meyers Beach so as you can see in the background, we had yet another great view on the Gulf of Mexico (our last for a while anyway).
Before and after dinner, Bob drove us around some of the more "commercial" parts of Ft. Meyers Beach.  Guess what? It looked like a lot of other towns that have "beach" in their names.  One sometimes wonders how many souvenir shops selling the same shirts, shells and trinkets there can be. As for me, I will not lose any sleep worrying about that question. The final photo is of the four of us after dinner at the Fresh Catch Bistro. A really great restaurant that we would never have found without our wonderful hosts. Sadly, we said goodbye for now to Bonnie and Bob when they dropped us off at Lucky Us. Hopefully, they weren't too frightened when we told them "not to worry, we'll be back".

So, we are off tomorrow morning at the "crack" of 8:30 am to head east across Florida via the Okeechobee Waterway.

  1. We enjoyed catching up and swapping cruising stories. Looking forward to your next trip to/through Fort Myers. Sorry I missed your departure, but I did catch a few pic's of "Lucking Us" departing (will send under separate cover). Continue to enjoy your journey. Bonnie and Bob
